We are always looking for volunteers to help with any number of projects and help with the animals.
Minimum Age Requirements:
You must be at least 17 to work directly with the animals.
Children 12-16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times and may participate in shelter cat care, small animal care, and certain special event activities.
Socialize dogs: Help keep our dogs happy, healthy, and well-adjusted while they wait for their forever home. Exercise and play with them, brush them, or just sit under a tree and pet one.
Entertain a feline: Cats and kittens long for loving attention. Play with active kittens and cats or just have an adult cat curl up on your lap.
Enrichment: Assist in coming up with materials and designs for fun toys to entertain and intrigue both dogs and cats.
Reading with the animals: Bring your favorite books and read to the animals. It’s amazing how much of a difference it makes in reducing stress for all involved. Plus, it gives a chance for kids to practice reading aloud in front of an audience. It’s a great opportunity for introductory public speaking.
Take pictures: Increase an animal’s chance of adoption by photographing our animals for publicity materials and our website. This is a weekly commitment of 2 hours for 2 volunteers (a handler & a photographer).
Special events: Assist with special events such as off-site adoptions, donation drives, and community outreach programs that advocate animals, educate the public, and raise awareness of the Dawson County Humane Society and our mission.
Special skills: Assist with various auto mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, general maintenance, and computer projects that arise periodically.
General Housekeeping & Landscaping: Assist with unfolding newspaper to line cages, cleaning windows and floors, dishes, laundry, etc. Also assist with maintaining the grounds and flower beds.
